Series 1 introduces the Crawley family, headed by the 7th Earl of Grantham ( Hugh Bonneville) and his wife Cora ( Elizabeth McGovern ). The first series, comprising seven episodes, explores the lives of the fictional Crawley family, the hereditary Earl of Grantham, and their domestic servants.
Matthew Crawley, a young solicitor and the new heir, arrives at Downton Abbey with his mother, Isobel. They, the other Crawleys, and the servants all have difficulty adjusting to differences in class and culture whilst facing some resentment from certain family members and staff.
