  7. Reviewer. Steven Isaac. Movie Review. Author Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket, makes a great show of warning children and their parents away from his work by telling them that they’ll find nothing happy or pleasurable about his books—and now his movie. “The movie you’re about to see is extremely unpleasant,” Snicket intones as the film begins.

  8. It received positive reviews from critics, with many praising its production values, Newman's score and performances (particularly Carrey's performance), while some criticized its comical tone and short length. The film grossed $211 million worldwide.
