"Whatever happened ...?" as a direct question is simply wrong. E.g. "Whatever happened to him?" is wrong. "Whatever happened ..." cannot be a question. It's correct use is e.g.:"Whatever happened to him, it stayed unknown to the public." Btw, by saying it's wrong, I mean it's any kind of wrong.
