Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of the first episode of Uncle Buck. The series will debut on ABC on Tuesday, June 14 at 9pm EST.

Uncle Buck might not be the most popular or well-regarded entry in the John Hughes canon, but that 1989 comedy is fondly remembered for featuring one of the most memorable comedic performances from the late, great John Candy. That alone should give any network pause before adding Uncle Buck to the ever-growing list of films being rebooted or continued on television. Well, that and the fact that the latest round of TV cancellations proves that trading on an established name is far from a guarantee of ratings success these days. If your Uncle Buck reboot doesn't hinge on an actor with the same charm and screen presence as Candy, why bother revisiting the franchise in the first place? That pretty much sums up the problem with this sitcom.

Granted, the premise of Uncle Buck is practically tailor-made for the sitcom format. You have your upper middle class nuclear family, including two parents struggling to balance their hectic professional and personal lives and their trio of lovable, impish children. Throw the well-meaning but pathologically flaky and unreliable Uncle Buck into the mix as the household nanny, and you have a ready-made foundation for a show in the tradition of Full House, Family Matters and the like. It helps that this Uncle Buck series is a full reboot, unlike the short-lived CBS series from 1990 (starring comedian Kevin Meaney) that acted as a surprisingly bleak continuation of the original film.

Uncle Buck does little to stand out from a sea of like-minded sitcoms in ts first episode. Whereas the original movie had the comedic appeal of John Candy to bank on, Mike Epps isn't able to carry this reboot on his shoulders. But as formulaic as this premiere is, it's not without entertainment value. And with the obligatory setup out of the way, t...
