    Other people's feet

A flashback depicts the mountains of Patience, 24 years before. A scout leader is hosting a camping group and talking about the planets. Among the group are D'arcy, Judy and Asta. A boy named Ben hears a creaking and he and the others run to investigate. The scout leader tells them to never leave a fire unattended. A girl, Olivia, agrees to stay. She sees a bright light overhead. The boy, Ben, comes back, saying there was nothing. She says that she did see something, but the scout leader tells she knows the rules about lying. They sit down and one of the other girls asks if she really saw something. "No," she tells them, but then looks up at the sky. At the Vanderspeigle cabin, Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv return upstairs, pointing their guns. They find Harry just standing there. Mike tells him to put his hands above his head, that he's under arrest for the murder of Sam Hodges. "What?" asks Asta. She asks Harry what's going on. He raises his hands, then tells Mike and Liv they're going to have to catch him first. He climbs the walls and Mike shouts they have a werewolf. He jumps back down and Asta jumps in front of him, telling them not to hurt him. "That's a goddamn it!" shouts Sheriff Mike. Harry gives them the finger and leaps again. Mike starts shooting again, all of his shots going wide. Asta pleads with him to stop. She tells them he's an alien. "I knew they existed," says Liv. Harry returns to the ground again. It's the next day and Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv are sitting at Joe's Diner, eating breakfast. Mike raises his coffee cup, telling Deputy Liv she did good work on the severed foot killer case. He says it'll be nice to move on to something else. "You too," she agrees, saying that she thinks they deserve more bacon and maybe even a raise. He says she's absolutely right, that she's earned it. "Let's get some more of that bacon." Asta and Harry enter the diner. Neither Sheriff Mike nor Deputy Liv look startled to see them. In fact, they even give them a cheery greeting. They take a seat. "Wow, I guess it worked," comments Asta. He tells her that he's an alien and that they're very good at changing people's memories. A flashback shows him holding his hands over Mike and Liv's heads and emitting some kind of energy. In their minds, they see themselves heading out to go talk to Harry at his cabin. A car pulls up with a man in suit and tie. He gets out and tells them he's "Special Agent Fisher" of the FBI. He says they're tracking the dead foot killer and they've done excellent work. Liv says he's made her feel good about herself, so she's open to what he's going to say next. He tells them that they wouldn't be where they are without them, but it's time for them to take over. Mike agrees that if they're taking over, they should stop looking into it. "Fisher" tells them he can only tell them one thing, that the murderer is not Harry Vanderspeigle. At the diner, Asta says they're lucky they bought the story. She asks why he didn't simply replace her memory when she saw he was an alien. "Because I am not alone anymore," he tells her. He says she can thank him, that he killed the man who killed her friend Sam. She nods, saying that he's still a murderer. He replies that he's a murderer-murderer and it's very different. She says he can rationalize it, but Abigail Hodges is still accused of a murder she didn't commit. "So what?" he asks, saying she doesn't even like Abigail. She asks if he really has no empathy, saying he needs to put himself in other people's shoes. "Other people's shoes smell like other people's feet," he replies.

Mayor Hawthorne records a commercial for Patience to try to compete with the mayor of Jessup. He says that he's the mayor of a peaceful town where sometimes bad things happen that are totally unrelated. He says that they have some of the highest peaks, but a low mortality rate. "I don't think you should say mortality," comments Kate. He agrees it's too dark, asking an Alexa device for synonyms, though its suggestions of "fatality" or "bloodshed" aren't helpful. He says that maybe they should just lose the death theme. He tries some other ideas, all of which are lame, "such as our meth hospitalizations are way down since legalized marijuana." They accidentally end up splicing a bondage video with the recording and then Max hears them talking about. He asks what they're talking about, but Kate sends him to his room, saying he needs to clean it because her cousin Carlyn is coming over. Harry and Asta walk together, Asta asking him how long it's going to take to build the radio to contact his people. She asks if she can help and he laughs off the idea. He says he doesn't have long to build it and that human technology is very limited. She says he needs to get creative. She talks about E.T. and he replies that E.T. was an idiot, a sexy one, but very dumb. She says that they at least has fewer distractions now that his criminal past is taken care of. "Almost taken care of," he comments, tossing a cooler with the Botulinum toxin in a trash can. She pulls it out, asking if he learned anything from Law and Order. "Who's an idiot now?" she asks. He says it's still E.T. He sits and works at his cabin when there is a knock at the door. It's Kate, with her cousin Carlyn. She explains that they were out hiking when Carlyn tripped and cut her knee open. She asks him to examine it, saying that a patient went it to see Dr. Smallwood with a broken wrist and came out with a cast on her ankle. Harry asks if they'll leave if he fixes it. Carlyn examines his equations, saying that it looks as if he's building a laser. "Are you a talking ham?" he thinks to himself. Kate explains that Carlyn works at a lab in New Mexico Tech. "She's one smart lady" she says and she comments that for a layman, Harry's work is quite advanced. He tells her that it's radio telemetry, but his diffuser keeps melting. She says she's never known someone who's into this who wasn't also a troll. "Trolls live under bridges, I am not one of them," he says. Kate tells him it means she thinks he's handsome. He agrees that he has a handsome human face. Carlyn seems turned on. Asta, Deputy Liv and D'arcy all get text messages on their phones, which they seem pleased by. D'arcy is at the 59 and greets Kate who is there with Ben. She greets them, things still awkward between her and Ben from their kiss. Carlyn introduces herself, Kate explaining that they wanted to show Carlyn the town. D'arcy suggests that Carlyn attend a party, the subject of the text she received. Carlyn says it sounds fun and D'arcy agrees that it's going to be a huge girls' night. Ben says that she can't, that they have huge dinner plans. D'arcy begs Kate to join in, and Carlyn says they totally should, asking when the last time was that she let "Kendra" out to play. "Who's Kendra?" asks Ben and she explains that Kendra is Kate's alter ego when drunk, a real wild child. Kate finally gives in. Ben says that they already got a sitter and D'arcy tells him to call a friend and go out himself.

Max, outside, finds Sahar walking a dog. He tells her that he needs her help, then asks about the dog. She says that she walks the dog for her neighbors, that she isn't allowed one. He tells her she has to help him shave again. She says his face looks fine, but he tells her it's not his face. He looks around, then pulls up his shirt to reveal hair all over his back. She covers her eyes, saying he's going to need a lawnmower. She then agrees to help him, but says they need privacy. She takes him to the trailer home that was being used by the government agents, explaining that the phone they stole from his mother to track it still had battery. "They just left it here," she says. Meanwhile, inside a cabin, David Logan tries to track General McCallister. He despairs as he loses signal, wondering where he can possibly find a new dish. In the trailer, Sahar applies wax to Max. He asks if it will hurt and she tells him her mom says when she waxes her legs, it feels like being stung by a thousand hornets. He asks why she does it and she explains that as soon as women hit puberty, Western culture tells them we're not okay as we are. He laments that being a man is hard too. "I have to brush my teeth sometimes." She says she doesn't feel bad anymore and rips the hair off. Ben pays a visit to Sheriff Mike. In an awkward conversation, he asks him if he's ever tried wheat beers. Sheriff Mike asks him if he's asking him on a date and Ben says he just wants to hang out. Mike tells him he doesn't have time, that he takes care of his father at home. Deputy Liv comes in, saying that Lewis would love to get out of the house and have a beer. Mike agrees to think about it. "He'll definitely be there," says Liv. The girls get together at the 59 for their night out, "GN 59." They discuss past hangouts and D'arcy pulls out a pair of rollerskates, saying she might need to make a quick getaway. Kayla shows up. They ask if everything is fine with her husband Shane and she says she just needed to get out of the house. Kate agrees, saying that sometimes just needing to get out of the house in an emergency. Carlyn discusses her troubles with men, saying that the men in the town where she lives really sucks and that the lab supervisor thinks grabbing her buttocks is a job perk. She says she thought she was never going to meet a nice guy until today. "You met a guy here? Today?" wonders D'arcy. They ask who and Carlyn smiles at Harry, who is standing in the doorway. He winks. Harry enters the bar. Asta asks him what he's doing there, that he told her that every minute he's not working on the radio is a minute they all come closer to certain death. He tells her he is, but it will never work without a diffuser. He continues that Carlyn is a scientist in a lab that uses portable diffusers. "So what?" she asks. He says he's not as pretty as E.T., but he can be a charming alien. He waves his hand at Carlyn. The two sit down together and Carlyn asks if he comes to the 59 a lot. He says that it's the gin joint that's closet to his heart. She laughs and he kisses her hand. He asks about her perfume. She says that it's Jergens, that she did a BM, so she had to wash. He says that he doesn't wash his hands after he urinates, that the skin on his penis is very clean.
