Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller is an American actor, comedian, producer, film director, and screenwriter. In Extras he appears as a fictionalised version of himself in the episode 'Ben Stiller'.
Stiller is the son of the comedians and actors Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. After beginning his acting career with a play, he wrote several mockumentaries and was offered his own show, titled The Ben Stiller Show, which he produced and hosted for its 13-episode run. Having previously acted in television, he began acting in films. He made his directorial debut with Reality Bites. Throughout his career he has written, starred in, directed, or produced more than 50 films including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Zoolander, The Cable Guy, There's Something About Mary, the Meet the Parents trilogy, DodgeBall, Tropic Thunder, the Madagascar series, and the Night at the Museum trilogy. He has also made numerous cameos in music videos, television shows, and films.
In Extras, Ben Stiller is short-tempered, insensitive, perfectionistic, and mentally unsound. He often loses his temper on the set of his film, raising his voice at and threatening various cast and crew members; he even lashes out at Goran, a Yugoslav War survivor who Stiller's film is based on, for mentioning his deceased family too often.
The personality of his fictionalised self in Extras contrasts Stiller's relatively tame, composed, and inward-thinking personality in real life.
•After the Extras episode 'Ben Stiller', Stiller and Ricky Gervais worked together again on the Night At The Museum franchise; Stiller played night guard Larry Daley whilst Gervais played museum curator Dr. McPhee.
•Stiller's portrayal of himself is reminiscent of his appearance on the sitcom Friends. In the episode 'The One With The Screamer', Stiller plays Tommy – an enraged man who frightens and intimidates anyone who even slightly irritates him.
Ben Stiller and Patrick Stewart received nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, Kate Winslet received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Gervais and Merchant were also nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode with Kate Winslet.
