John Dickens, the son of William Dickens and Elizabeth Ball Dickens, was born in 1785. His parents were servants in the household of John Crewe, a large landowner in Cheshire with a house in Lower Grosvenor Street, Mayfair. William Dickens, recently promoted to the post of butler, died just before his son was born.

In 1823, the family moved to London, where John Dickens—never financially stable—was eventually committed to Marshalsea Prison for debt, remaining there for three months.
