He converted to the Quaker religion in his twenties and was jailed several times for his resistance to the Church of England. He received a royal charter from King Charles II to organize the new colony in 1681 and died in England in 1718.

He was a Quaker leader who set forth democratic principles and published a plan for a United States of Europe. He also published a tract against the doctrine of the trinity and was imprisoned for it.
