The number of confirmed cases is lower than the true number of infections – this is due to limited testing. In a separate post we discuss how models of COVID-19 help us estimate the true number of infections. → We provide more detail on these points in our page on Cases of COVID-19.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 ( COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ( SARS-CoV-2 ). The virus was confirmed to have spread to Switzerland on 25 February 2020 when the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed following a COVID-19 pandemic in Italy.
It quickly spread across the globe and led to the COVID-19 pandemic. As SARS-CoV-2 was a new virus, most people's immune systems were not prepared for it. In the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 100 million cases were recorded in Europe alone. Even in Switzerland, nearly everyone has come into contact with the coronavirus.
