What is the national network of tobacco cessation quitlines?
Quitlines are telephone-based tobacco cessation services that help tobacco users quit. Services offered by quitlines include coaching and counseling, referrals, mailed materials, training to healthcare providers, Web-based services and, in some instances, free medications such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
The Quitline is staffed by trained coaches, all of whom have completed rigorous Tobacco Treatment Specialist training. The Quitline is operated by National Jewish Health, the leading respiratory hospital in the United States. Quitting tobacco takes courage, time, and energy. It can take several attempts to quit for good.
What populations does the Quitline serve? Why should I refer my patients to the Quitline instead of another tobacco cessation program? How do I refer patients to the Quitline? What are the education and qualifications of the Quitline coaches? Do my patients need to work with a coach as part of the Quitline?
The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends quitline interventions — especially proactive quitlines (which offer follow-up counseling calls) — to increase tobacco cessation in people interested in quitting. Quitlines provide evidence-based behavioral counseling and support over the phone to help people quit using tobacco.
