- Tours of the main house are a highlight of any visit to Monticello. But there’s much more to experience. A visit starts at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center where you'll find exhibits on Jefferson and Monticello, an introductory film, a hands-on discovery room, food, shopping, and free parking for cars, buses and RVs.

Visitor Tip #1 – At all costs, get a tour as early in the day as possible (first tour if you can) and then take the first shuttle bus up to the house.

When we were there in 2009, no one checked to see if we had a ticket for the grounds. We rode the bus to the house from the visitor's center and they did check. There's a trail you can take past the cemetary and on to the grounds. Honestly, it isn't as interesting as you might think. We did enjoy the house tour though. The guide was quite good.
