Chiayi County is a county in Taiwan. Located in southwestern Taiwan surrounding but not including Chiayi City, it is the sixth largest county in the island of Taiwan. Its major tourist destination is Alishan National Scenic Area.
July 20, 2023. By Nick Kembel. Chiayi (嘉義 or Jiayi) is a city and county that multitudes of travelers pass through on the way to Alishan (Ali Mountain), Taiwan’s most poplar high mountain resort. Alishan is in Chiayi county, but right on the border with Nantou county, and with sunrise views facing Yushan, Taiwan’s tallest mountain.
- Visit traditional Japanese houses at Hinoki Village. Hinoki Village used to be dormitories for the Forest Department Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Era.
- Take Instagram photos at the Song of the Forest. Designed by Wang Wen-Zhi, an artist from Chiayi, the Song of the Forest is a large-scale landmark made with local materials like wood, rattan, rocks and discarded railway tracks.
- See old trains at the Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park. As one of the world’s most famous mountain railways, the Alishan Forest Railway begins in Chiayi, where the train zigzags uphill to Alishan.
- Join a free tour around the Old Prison in Chiayi. Walk around on your own or join one of the four free guided tours through the former prison in Chiayi.

Despite its relatively small population compared to other counties in Taiwan, it has some of the most beautiful scenery, delicious local food, and interesting history. Come for Alishan, and stay for everything else you find along the way.
