Naval Station Treasure Island (NSTI) played an important role in the United States' naval efforts during WWII, serving as a distribution and training site. The geographical location of TI, in the middle of a harbor with a sheltered lagoon, Clipper Cove, and proximity to the Pacific made it an ideal location for military purposes.
Naval Station, Treasure Island closed 30 September 1997. The base lies within San Francisco Bay and within the jurisdiction of the City of San Francisco. The Naval Station comprises a portion of Yerba Buena Island, and all of the 403-acre Treasure Island, originally built as a municipal airport.
But in 1941, the U.S. Navy moved onto Treasure Island as America prepared for World War II. The island became a major training and education center, with 4.5 million personnel shipped overseas from Treasure Island. By the time the war ended in 1945, aviation had changed dramatically.
