The park aims to restore wildlife habitat for wildlife and native plants. It contains over 300 acres of northern Chihuahan Desert and has been designated an Important Birding Area (IBA) by the Audubon Society and is the newest stop (#43) on the New Mexico Statewide Birding Trail.

The park is located near Las Cruces and just west of Mesilla. The park itself encompasses approximately 305 acres (1.23 km 2), at an elevation of 3,900 feet (1,200 m). The park consists of river woodlands and restored wetlands. It is used by migratory birds, and is popular for birdwatching, walking, and bicycling.
