The Muddy River. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, the Muddy River connects a series of brooks and ponds that run through sections of Boston's Emerald Necklace, including the south boundary of Brookline. The Muddy River is part of the Emerald Necklace Project, built between 1880 and 1900.
This construction project has been in the works for over 20-years. The overall project objective is to increase flood control through improvements to restrictive drainage culverts and by dredging accumulated sediment dnd removing invasive vegetation that is constricting flow.
The US Army Corps of Engineers, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), City of Boston, and Town of Brookline are working together (along with a number of sub-contractors) to improve climate resiliency and recreational use of the Muddy River and its parks.
Aug 28, 2020 · The project work will take place on Boston, Brookline and Commonwealth of Massachusetts land and stretch from Olmsted Park to the Back Bay Fens. Phase 2 is anticipated to be completed over approximately 36 months and is intended to remove over 90,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Muddy River.
