From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Onawa is a city in, and the county seat of, Monona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,998 at the 2010 Census. It is the largest town on the Iowa side of the Missouri River between Council Bluffs and Sioux City.

Monona County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,243. The county seat is Onawa.
The area around present-day Onawa was a stopping point in 1804 for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark during their exploration of the newly obtained Louisiana Purchase. Many years later, that site was memorialized as the Lewis and Clark State Park. Monona County was formed in 1851. It was perhaps named for an Indian word meaning "beautiful valley."
