History. Main Avenue in 1911. The city originated from a Dutch settlement on the Passaic River established in 1679 which was called Acquackanonk. Industrial growth began in the 19th century, as Passaic became a textile and metalworking center. A commercial center formed around a wharf at the foot of present-day Main Avenue.
The landscape of Passaic County, near the north edge of New Jersey, spans some hilly areas and has dozens of lakes. The county covers a region about 30 × 20 miles wide (48 × 32 km). The region is split by major roads, including portions of Interstate 287 and Interstate 80, near Paterson.

Passaic county was founded in 1837 and named for the Passaic River. The industrial cities of Paterson, Passaic, and Clifton help make manufacturing (plastics and search and navigation equipment) the main economic activity. Also important are health and business services. Area 185 square miles (479 square km).
One hundred and twenty-five years ago on Wednesday, April 2, 1873, an act to incorporate the City of Passaic was signed. As we celebrate 125 years as an incorporated city, we also celebrate 320 years of existence, as the area of modern day Passaic was originally settled in 1678 by Dutch pioneers.
