  1. Photographic Activity Test ( PAT) is an ISO standard test detailed in ISO 18916:2007 (E), updated in 2007. [1] Previous versions of the standard were numbered ISO 14523:1999 (E). [1] The test evaluates materials for archival quality and their use in photographic enclosures. Many different types of materials can be tested including: paper ...

  2. The Photographic Activity Test, widely known as the PAT, is an International Standard in itself: ISO 18916. The PAT explores the possibility of chemical interactions between photographs and a given material after prolonged contact. It uses two special detectors. One detector screens for oxidation and reduction reactions which can cause image ...

  3. Activity Test. National Archives of Australia has suspended its Material Testing Service until the end of 2024. The Photographic Activity Test (PAT) was developed by the Image Permanence Institute of the United States to test the quality of photographic storage materials. It is the subject of International Standards Organisation standard ISO ...

  4. Purpose of the P.A.T. The Photographic Activity Test is an internationally recognized standard (ISO 18916) developed to assess the potential for materials to cause damage to photographs over time. It identifies substances that may contribute to the deterioration of photographs, negatives and slides.

  5. The Photographic Activity Test uses a controlled temperature and humidity environment (85% RH and 70C) to incubate a stacked sandwich of samples and degradation detection plates for up to 15 to 40 days. At the end of the simulated aging period, instruments are used to detect fading, staining, or other changes.

  6. Passing the photographic activity test (PAT) does not indicate that a material is archival. This term has no clear definition and is not used in this document. Photo-safe storage enclosures and their components are covered in ISO 18902, which supersedes the PAT and includes passing the criteria of PAT.

  7. Photographic Activity Test. n. (abbr. PAT) a standard procedure to check for potential chemical reactions between materials used to make enclosures and photographs stored in those enclosures. (View Citations)
