The fifth season of The Vampire Diaries premiered in the United States during on October 3, 2013. It was announced on February 11, 2013 that the show was renewed for another season. Julie Plec later tweeted to confirm this.
Season Five of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES begins with a sense of hope for Elena (Nina Dobrev). After a very passionate summer with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Elena heads to Whitmore College with Caroline (Candice Accola), not knowing that Bonnie (Kat Graham) had sacrificed her life in order to resurrect Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). As Bonnie's friends fought to bring her back to life as the Anchor to The Other Side, Stefan (Paul Wesley) had to face-off with his immortal doppelgänger Silas, and the newly human Katherine (Nina Dobrev) struggled with mortality and motherhood. Damon's relationship with Elena is put to the test when Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey), an old vampire friend from Damon's past, revealed he's still alive and looking for some revenge. Stefan and Caroline's friendship deepened as they stood up to the Travelers, a nomadic witch tribe led by the ruthless Markos, who are driven to strip Mystic Falls of magic and cast out all of its supernatural residents. Finally, having lost his town and fearing to lose his loved ones on the imploding Other Side, Damon makes a huge sacrifice to bring all of them back - to catastrophic results.

•Premiere date was October 10, 2013, but it is changed to October 3, 2013. •Day 1 in the writers room for Season Five on April 15, 2013 •There will be ample opportunity for some characters from TVD and The Originals to move between shows on occasion. •Tyler Lockwood is the first character to crossover to The Originals. •Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah appeared in The Vampire Diaries. •Bonnie will remain as a series regular. •This is the only season with two witches in the main cast that are Bonnie and Katherine. •A new doppelgänger appeared in Rescue Me, episode seventeen of Season Five, and it was a Silas doppelgänger, called Tom Avery. •This is the first season which took place over a single school year, both at Whitmore College and Mystic Falls High School. It's not split between two seasons like Junior Year 2009-2010 (Seasons One and Two) and Senior Year 2010-2011 (Seasons Three and Four). •Season Five also has the largest and somewhat confusing time jumps between episodes to cover a full year of school from the Fall of 2011 through the Spring of 2012. •This will be the first to feature three permanent deaths in the season finale and in the series in general, though these three deaths will bring the total to four after Katherine's in Gone Girl.

(8 months) •Season Five is the second season to have a time-jump at its beginning. The season to do so was Season Three. Later Season Seven would start with a 3 years time-jump.
