- Noir. Although it shares some similarities with hardboiled, noir is its own sub-genre. While both involve a character investigating a crime in a corrupt and unfair society, the line between who is morally good and bad is usually less clear in noir.
- Amateur Sleuth. This sub-genre encompasses all mysteries that center a sleuth who is not a private or police detective solving a crime. The protagonist often uses skills from their profession, hobby, or lived experiences to search for clues.
- Cozy Mystery. Cozy mysteries feature an amateur sleuth solving a crime within a small, close-knit community. What differentiates them within the broader category of amateur sleuth mysteries?
Some mystery books are non-fiction. Mystery fiction can be detective stories in which the emphasis is on the puzzle or suspense element and its logical solution such as a whodunit. Mystery fiction can be contrasted with hardboiled detective stories, which focus on action and gritty realism.
- Classic/Traditional. In these mysteries there is a crime committed, usually a murder, in a closed social setting. For example, a small village, university, or club.
- Crime. These novels focus on the planning or committing of a crime and offer detailed descriptions of the criminal and criminal underworld from perspective of those who live in it.
- Police Procedurals/Hardboiled. These are like crime mysteries but instead of focusing on the criminal, they focus instead on the police investigation.
- Noir. Mysteries like these are atmospheric, stark, and gritty. Classic Noir protagonists are complex characters who are flawed, risk takers and often self-destructive.
