Apr 13, 2024 · Birmingham Sound. Birmingham Sound is a type of Rechno that originated in Birmingham, England, during the 1990s. It’s best known for its hard and fast sound that doesn’t include the Berlin and Detroit Techno’s Funk roots. The music sounds like repetitive pumps, and it’s often described as harsh and heavy.
- Detroit Techno. When Chicago DJs were innovating disco in the form of House music in the 80s, musicians Derek May, Juan Atkins, and Derek Saunderson worked to develop a futuristic sound that was inspired by New Wave European electronic music made by artists like Kraftwerk, Devo, The Human League and Gary Numan.
- Minimal Techno. Minimal Techno ranges from 125 to 130 BPM and 128 BPM is often regarded as the optimum tempo for it. It emerged in the 90s and there are two main characteristics of this sound: “skeletalism” which uses embellishments only to add variation to the song and the emphasis is on the core elements such as the beat and groove; and “massification” which contains many layers but only with a few sonic elements.
- Industrial Techno. Influenced by the noisy sound and aesthetic of Industrial music artists such as Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, Industrial Techno emerged in the 90s and experienced a resurgence in the 2010s.
- Deep Techno. Deep techno is a broad umbrella of music that is generally ambient and the focus is on dancing and physical movement. The beat is simple and repetitive, with a booming kick drum.

- Minimal Techno. Techno stripped it down to its pants and socks. That’s what we’re looking at here. Producers such as Richie Hawtin and Robert Hood have mastered the art of using minimal elements to create a barely-there yet hypnotic groove that locks listeners in.
- Dub Techno. The techno subgenre that marries the rhythmic elements of techno with the sound-processing techniques of dub. Characterized by its heavy use of reverb and delay, this type of techno, pioneered by artists like Basic Channel, offers listeners an experience that transcends the usual club sound.
- Hard Techno. If you find yourself craving music with an ear-bleeding intensity, hard techno might be your thing. An aggressive tempo, say somewhere between 140 and 150 BPM, combined with super heavy beats, are the bedrock of this type of techno.
