     So you are getting nil, which means that there is something in your string that is invalid. How could we find out what? Well it's certainly not spaces, so let's break your string into "words":

     and now try to decode each "word" and see which ones fail:

     Now removingPercentEncoding decodes UTF-8, so checking each of those % sequences to see if they are valid UTF-8 shows that %91, %92 & %A0 are not. However they are valid Windows-1252 encodings - single curly quotes and the non-breaking space.

     So you need to decode the string as Windows-1252 not UTF-8. Time for you to look in the documentation...

     What kind of C?

     Mostly ANSI C, with a lot of time looking at the machine code it generates.

     But, does an OS even have a heap?

     Malloc asks the operating system for a pointer to some memory it is allowed to use. If a program running on an OS (user mode) tries to access memory it doesn't own, it will give a segmentation fault. An OS is allowed to directly access all the physical memory on the system, malloc not needed, no seg-faults on any address that exists.

     What about a call stack?

     The call stack actually often works at the hardware level, with a link register.

     For file access, the OS needs access to a disk driver, which needs to know how to read the file system that's on the disk (there are a lot of different kinds) Sometimes the OS has one built in, but I think it's more common that the boot loader hands it one to start with, and it loads another (bigger) one. The disk driver has access to the hardware IO of the physical disk, and builds from that.

     Excellent questions, all. The answer is: little to none of the standard C library is available in the "dialect" of C used to write an operating system. In the Linux kernel, for example, the standard memory allocation functions malloc, nmalloc, free etc. are replaced with special kernel-internel memory allocation functions kmalloc and kfree, with special restrictions on their use. The operating system must provide its own "heap" -- in the Linux kernel, physical memory pages that have been allocated for kernel use must be non-pageable and often physically continguous. Similarly, the operating system kernel maintains its own special call stack, the use of which requires, from memory, special support from the GCC compiler.

     Also, how much of an operating system would actually be written in C? All of it?

     As far as I'm aware, operating systems are overwhelmingly written in C. Some architecture-specific features are coded in assembler, but usually very little to improve portability and maintainability: the Linux kernel has some assembler but tries to minimize it as much as possible.

     What about architecture dependent code? What about the higher levels of abstraction--does that ever get written in higher level languages, like C++?

     Usually the kernel will be written in pure C, but sometimes the higher level frameworks and APIs are written in a higher level language. For example, the Cocoa framework/API on MacOS is written in Objective C, and the BeOS higher level APIs were written in C++. Much of Microsoft's .NET framework was written in C#, with the "Common Language Runtime" written in a mix of C++ and assembler. The QT widget set most often used on Linux is written in C++. Of course, this introduces philosophical questions about what counts as "the operating system."

     The Linux kernel is definitely worth looking at for this, although, it must be said, it is huge and intimidating for anyone to read from scratch.

     C is a very low level language, and you can do a lot of things directly. Any of the C library methods (like malloc, printf, crlscr etc) need to be implemented first, to invoke them from C (Have a look at libc concepts for example). I'll give an example below.

     Let us see how the C library methods are implemented under the hood. We'll go with a clrscr example. When you implement such methods, you'll access system devices directly. For ex, for clrscr (clearing the screen) we know that the video memory is resident at 0xB8000. Hence, to write to screen or to clear it, we start by assigning a pointer to that location.

     In video.c

     Let us write our mini kernel now. This will clear the screen when the control is handed over to our 'kernel' from the boot loader. In main.c

     To compile our 'kernel', you might use gcc to compile it to a pure bin format.

     If you noticed the ld parameters above, you see that we are specifying the default load location of your Kernel as 0x1000. Now, you need to create a boot loader. From your boot loader logic, you might want to pass control to your Kernel, like

     Technically any kind of script will work, but ideally you'll want to use a combination of a LocalScript, a normal Script, and a RemoteEvent.

     What's a LocalScript, Script, and RemoteEvent?

     The explanations below are fairly basic.

     A LocalScript is a script that only runs on a client. A LocalScript is capable of executing almost any task you can complete using any other script in Roblox, but typically only the client that the LocalScript is running on will be affected.

     For example, if you tried changing the color of a blue brick to red, then the client that the LocalScript is running on will see a red brick but everyone else will still see blue because LocalScripts cannot affect anything beyond the client the LocalScript is being run on without some help from a RemoteEvent (I'll touch on that later).

     A Script is a script that runs on the server. You can use it to make server-side changes that will be replicated across all clients. For example, if you wanted to change our blue brick from earlier to red in a Script instead of a LocalScript, then everyone will see a red brick because changes on the server are displayed across all clients.

     A RemoteEvent is a special object that you can use for Scripts and LocalScripts to communicate. This allows you to have a client running some LocalScript to request some action that will be carried about by the Script.

     For example, if you made a GUI with a button that let you change the blue brick into a red brick by clicking a button in the GUI, then you could have (1) a LocalScript detect when the button is clicked, (2) have the LocalScript "fire" an event through the RemoteEvent, and (3) have a Script on the server "listening" for an event to be fired through the RemoteEvent, and when it hears one, it'll change the blue brick into a red one. That way, you can have some client-only object (in this case, the button) influence something on the server.

You could start by looking up basic coding tutorials to help yourself understand how Lua and programming in general works, or you could look up articles about LocalScripts, Scripts, and RemoteEvents.

     So what about the tool?

     If I were you, I would have a Tool that has a LocalScript inside of it. In the LocalScript, you could have it listen for whenever the player clicks, which would work like so:

This is mainly so the fireball starts in the right place. -- Put code here to define the fireball, i.e. maybe you want to make it invisible and put flames on it or something fireball.Parent = workspace -- Instance.new("Part") only creates a new Part; it doesn't put it in Workspace by default and therefore will be basically nonexistent to all the players. This will move the Part into Workspace, which makes it visible. -- Put code here to make the fireball move. You could probably just use a rocket launcher script or something as a reference.end)

     That site is pretty out of date — it's from before Rust was stabilized. The only "plugins/syntax extensions" supported in Rust 1.20 are macros by example and custom derive, both of which are in The Rust Programming Language. Unstable Rust also has custom attributes and procedural macros, but both of those will likely change before they are stabilized.

     A rough mapping of the extension types listed in that site to the current types of macros would be something like:

     • Decorator -> Custom Derive
     • Modifier, MultiModifier -> Custom Attribute
     • NormalTT -> Procedural Macros
     • IdentTT -> Procedural Macros (I don't entirely understand what they are though, so I'm not sure)
     • MacroRulesTT -> Macros by Example (a.k.a. Declarative Macros)

     Examples of macros by example are easy to find (for example std and the log crate make extensive use of them). The serde_derive crate is probably the best example of using custom derive.
