Laurence Stephen Lowry. Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA ( / ˈlaʊri / LAO-ree; 1 November 1887 – 23 February 1976) was an English artist. His drawings and paintings mainly depict Pendlebury, Greater Manchester (where he lived and worked for more than 40 years) as well as Salford and its vicinity.
Robert Lowry (March 12, 1826 – 25 November 1899) was an American preacher who became a popular writer of gospel music in the mid- to late-19th century. His best-known hymns include " Shall We Gather at the River ", "Christ Arose!", " How Can I Keep from Singing? " and " Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus ".
In 1932, his father died and Lowry was responsible to take care of his bedridden, 73 year old mother. He was her caretaker for seven years, and only painted while his mother was sleeping. This was a time described by Lowry as depressing and lonely.
Helen died of cancer in 1962, but Lowry and her brother still share a close relationship. Lowry's father was an army dentist, whose work moved the family all over the United States and to many parts of the world. Lowry and her family moved from Hawaii to Brooklyn, New York, in 1940, when Lowry was three years old.
