The Rhein-Neckar-Arena officially opened on 24 January 2009 with a friendly match between 1899 Hoffenheim and a selection of players from the Rhein-Neckar region. Between 2011 and 2019 the stadium was called WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena following a naming rights sponsorship deal.
It replaced TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's former ground, the Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion. The stadium is the largest in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area, although it is situated in a town with only 36,000 inhabitants.
