The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 1972. Fronted by Alex Harvey accompanied by Zal Cleminson on guitar, bassist Chris Glen, keyboard player Hugh McKenna (28 November 1949–18 December 2019) and drummer Ted McKenna, their music was a blend of blues rock and hard rock, with cabaret elements.

For several years, Cleminson played sideman to Harvey, creating inspiring and influential music that would aid in defining the decade. But the typical troubles with plague many bands led to a falling out, and soon Cleminson was on the road again, taking shelter with fellow scene mates, Nazareth.
May 1, 2022 · May 1, 2022. Zal Cleminson is legendary guitarist of Tear Gas and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Cleminson began his career in the late-1960s. His first band Tear Gas morphed into the backing band for Alex Harvey, and when that band split in 1977, he and other members continued on as The Zal Band, before he joined Nazareth in 1979.
