The Discalced Carmelites, both nuns and friars, aimed at a more retired and contemplative form of life, in keeping with the spirit of the original 13th century Rule of Life. Thus, it is today that there are two branches of the Carmelite family: the Ancient Observance (O. Carm.) and the Discalced (OCD). Each branch has its own Secular Order.

Discalced Carmelites. The most famous Carmelite saint, St. Teresa of Avila, lived in Spain in the 16th century, a time when cloistered monasteries had grown lax. St. Teresa was determined to return to the original roots of the order, emphasizing a strict enclosure, radical poverty, and contemplative prayer.

The Discalced Carmel acknowledges Saint Teresa as its mother and foundress. It is the only Order which has a woman as its foundress and, distinct from the other Orders which have male and female branches, the nuns were established before the friars.

Thanks to her strong collaboration with the Carmelites John of the Cross and Anthony of Jesus, they founded the first convent of Discalced Carmelite Friars in Duruelo (Spain) on November 28th, 1568.
