Directed by Phyllida Lloyd with a book by Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar, and Kees Prins, the musical had its world premiere on 17 April 2018 at the Aldwych Theatre in London. The Broadway production opened on 7 November 2019.

The theatre first gained popularity housing a series of farces by Ben Travers between 1923 and 1933 which became known as ‘The Aldwych Farces.’ Diversely, nearly thirty years later, The Royal Shakespeare Company acquired the Aldwych as their London base, and for the next 21 years, the Aldwych was the home of Shakespeare in the capital.

The theatre is named after the Aldwych, the crescent-shaped street that branches from The Strand. Throughout its history, the Grade II listed Aldwych Theatre has been home to many successful musicals and plays. Notable examples include Dirty Dancing, Whistle Down the Wind and the hit Carole King musical Beautiful.
The Aldwych Theatre opened in 1905 as a companion to what is now known as the Novello Theatre, and spent its first few years hosting a number of musical comedies. In 1909, it presented the first English performance of Anton Chekov’s The Cherry Orchard.
