    A native of West Irvine, Stanton was born on July 14, 1926. He is the eldest son of Ersel, a cook and Sheridan Harry Stanton, a tobacco farmer as well as a barber. He grew up with his younger brothers Archie, Ralph, and Stan. He went to Lafayette High School and graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington in journalism and radio arts. He used to perform under theatre director Wallace Briggsat the Guignol Theatre. He then attended the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California.

Stanton made his film debut with the Western Tomahawk Trail.     1984 bekam Stanton eine seiner wenigen Hauptrollen unter der Regie von Wim Wenders in dessen Film Paris, Texas. In John Carroll Lynchs Regiedebüt Lucky (2017) spielte er seine letzte Hauptrolle als hochbetagter Atheist, der sich mit seiner Sterblichkeit auseinandersetzen muss.[5]
