All that can be said with certainty is that it is a Roman play.
By repeatedly featuring conflicts between different points of view, Antony and Cleopatra functions not simply as tragedy, history, or Liebestod (a story of a couple dying for love) but as an inquiry into the historical, political, philosophical, and aesthetic grounds on which any story might be staged in the theater.

Oh no. They both rule over two of the most important empires in history: Rome and Ancient Egypt. The play opens in Cleopatra’s palace in Alexandria, Egypt. But as the story continues, Antony’s political and social duties take the action to Rome, Syria, Actium, Parthia (modern-day Iraq), Athens, and various military camps throughout Egypt.
The play does not sugar over their famous love affair; instead Shakespeare puts on stage Cleopatra’s calculated attempts to seduce Antony from his responsibilities in Rome, as well as Antony’s jealous rages and threats against Cleopatra’s life when he thinks she has betrayed him to Caesar.
