Snake-Eyes is arguably the most well-known good guy in the G.I. Joe universe. A ninja decked in all black, Snake-Eyes is the master of stealth within the G.I. Joes. He is an expert in many forms of hand-to-hand combat, ranging from karate to tae kwon do.

The greatest rivalry in the history of G.I. Joe is arguably Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, the yin and yang between G.I. Joe and Cobra. While training with Hard Master, the martial artist uncle of Storm Shadow, Snake-Eyes was targeted by an assassination attempt gone awry at the hands of Cobra. Hard Master died in the process and the finger was pointed in the direction of Storm Shadow for the misdeed.

Snake-Eyes has eyes for the lovely Scarlett of the G.I. Joes. Ever in pursuit of the lady he loves, Snake-Eyes has been in an on-again, off-again love affair with the sultry redhead for years. He proposed to her once the G.I. Joes got back together and she accepted his offer of marriage.

Snake-Eyes made his plastic debut as a part of the original 1982 line-up of G.I. Joe, complete with the straight arms with little articulation. His first mold featured a black ninja suit throughout the entirety of the model. He was released again in 1985 with a lighter color of the black that could best be described as “charcoal” lightening the features of the character, such as the goggles, ammunition strapped to the chest, and the like. He came with Timber, his wolf.

1989 saw another black variation of Snake-Eyes that has silver blades attached to the chest, silver tape around the wrist, and silver goggles. It was a step in a bolder direction for the nondescript ninja. 1991’s rendition brought the early ‘90s out of Snake-Eyes, offering a neon blue ninja with a silver vest and a silver hockey mask, completing the look with neon orange goggles.

In 1993, Snake-Eyes received a Ninja Force makeover that resembled something more sinister than his previous incarnation, but kept the neon blue trim. Gone were the goggles, replaced by white eye holes. He could perform a martial arts motion by squeezing his legs together, the first Snake-Eyes to feature any such thing. This mold was used for the Shadow Ninjas release a year later, where water changes the color of the figure.

In G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Snake-Eyes (as portrayed by Ray Park) is seen as more of a specialist than a story-driven, multi-layered character. His upbringing is shown as that of a thief who steals from the Arashikage clan out of hunger, but is taken in from the cold by Hard Master. Storm Shadow is shown as being a jealous child of his uncle’s interactions with the homeless child. When Hard Master is murdered, Storm Shadow is the suspected killer.

Blind Master, the ruler of the Arashikage clan following the death of Hard Master, sends Snake-Eyes (again played by Ray Park) and Storm Shadow’s nephew, Jinx, out to track down the rogue Arashikage, Storm Shadow. Storm Shadow has survived his wounds from the first film and is being hunted by the two for questioning regarding his uncle’s death.

The cat is out of the bag once Storm Shadow is caught by Snake-Eyes and Jinx, as he reveals that he joined Cobra in an effort to track down Hard Master’s true killer. He has learned that Zartan, who is posing as President of the United States, is the killer of his uncle. Snake-Eyes trusts him as Storm Shadow joins the Joes and avenges his uncle’s death.

Snake-Eyes is commemorated as a hero following the events of the film.

Tommy Arashikage met Snake-Eyes while in Vietnam as a part of the Long Range Recon Patrol. The two quickly bonded and Tommy offered the man who would become Snake-Eyes the opportunity to train at his uncle’s dojo. Snake-Eyes takes him up on the offer once the Vietnam War’s backlash causes him to sour of America’s opinion of innocent veterans caught between a rock and a hard place. He was also informed of the death of his family in a car accident, the same car accident involving Cobra Commander’s brother that set the Commander on the path of the sociopath.

Hard Master takes a liking to his newest pupil and soon Snake-Eyes overtakes Tommy, now known as Storm Shadow, on the grounds. When Zartan attempts to assassinate Snake-Eyes, he misses and kills Hard Master instead. Storm Shadow is framed for the murders, forcing him to go undercover within Cobra to find his uncle’s true killer.

Throughout the years, Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes faced one another with Snake-Eyes never knowing the intentions of his once-good friend. Storm Shadow always secretly looked out for Snake-Eyes over the years, taking him under his wing when left for dead. Storm Shadow eventually lets him in on his scheme after so many years, and his plan is seen to fruition.

Scarlett and Snake-Eyes became close friends when Scarlett was put in charge of training new recruits and she noticed that Snake-Eyes allowed her to win against him in order to save her face. Snake-Eyes suffered nearly grave wounds while trying to protect Scarlett inside of a helicopter crash, dealing damage to his vocal chords in the process. His face terribly scarred and his voice gone, Snake-Eyes carried out the mission to save his dead sister’s fiancée. Snake-Eyes later had to stab Scarlett in order to protect her cover, as she was posing as a Cobra agent. She survived.
