Possession Sound is part of Puget Sound, located in the U.S. state of Washington between Whidbey Island and the shoreline of Snohomish County approximately between the cities of Everett and Mukilteo. Possession Sound connects the main Puget Sound basin to the south with Saratoga Passage and Port Susan to the north.

Possession Sound is 3-6 nm wide, east to west and 9 nm long, north to south, and lies along the south eastern shore of Whidbey Island. It is south of Camano Island where currents are weak and variable. Because of its shallow depth, large tidal exchanges are significant to a good trip plan, especially at the mouth of the Snohomish River in Everett.
Afternoon wind in this area is pretty typical, so keep an eye on weather forecasts and currents and be ready for some chop.Most beachfront property on Whidbey is private. Route map. This itinerary could also be done as a day trip out of Mukilteo. Launch at Port of Everett. Even inside Jetty Island, the currents were stronger than I expected. Harbor seal near Jetty Island. Possession Sound was full of harbor seals and California sea lions, plus a few Steller sea lions. Snow geese over Possession Sound.
The mix of saltwater from Possession Sound and fresh water from the Snohomish River create a unique ecosystem, making it one of the best birding spots in Puget Sound. On this walk, you don’t want to forget your binoculars!
