Set during the Cultural Revolution, at the peak of the cult of personality of Chairman Mao, the novel tells the story of an affair between the Liu Lian, the wife of a powerful military commander, and a young peasant soldier, Wu Dawang.
Mu-Gwang (Yeon Woo-Jin) is an exemplary soldier. He dreams of being successful for his wife and child. Mu-Gwang gets assigned to work as a cook at the division commander’s (Cho Seong-Ha) house. The division commander has a young wife, Soo-Ryun (Ji An).
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Yan Lian Ke, “Serve the People” is a 2022 South Korean romantic film directed by Jang Cheol Soo. A model soldier finds himself in a precarious situation when he finds himself the object of desire of his commanding officer’s wife.
