Nov 2, 2015 · About 20,000 people die every year by committing suicide with a firearm. Let’s say we only save five percent of people by having everybody be required to use a gun safe to store a gun. Well, that’s still 1,000 people a year. Suicides are devastating to families and communities — they rip people’s lives apart.

In 2017, more than half of suicides ( 23,854, to be precise) were carried out with a gun, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though the typical victim of a gun homicide is a young, black male, the typical suicide victim is a middle-aged white man living in a rural area.

Based on data gathered by the CDC, in 2020, the rate of suicide in the US population was 13 per 100,000, far more frequent in men (21 per 100,000) than in women (5.4 per 100,000). Firearms were the most common means, again higher amongst men than women.
