Important movements and political ideas originated from the university, particularly on the question of nationhood around 1848. When the duchies were annexed by Prussia, circumstances in Kiel changed rapidly. The status of the university was brought into line with the other Prussian universities.
After the war, Kiel was briefly administered by both the Austrians and the Prussians, but the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 led to the formation of the Province of Schleswig-Holstein and the annexation of Kiel by Prussia in 1867.

Kiel was growing very fast thanks to its ship and military industry. After the second WW Kiel became part of the British occupation zone. In 1946 Kiel was released from Prussia and today's Schleswig-Holstein (SH) was founded.
Kiel University, officially the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, (German: Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, abbreviated CAU) is a public university in Kiel, Germany. It was founded in 1665 as the Academia Holsatorum Chiloniensis by Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and has about 27,000 students.

As a consequence the Austrian administration, highly regarded in Kiel, ended and Schleswig and Holstein became Prussian provinces. The integration of Schleswig-Holstein into the Northern German Confederation and later into the German Empire caused an economic boom in Kiel, which became “Reichskriegshafen” [Imperial War Harbors].
Despite a history dating back to 1665, Kiel University is a modern state university in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Located in the capital of the state, it is the largest and oldest within its borders and is one of the top employers in the region. It is often referred to as the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.
