A Variety review said Fagan was the real star of the film. "The animal being so well trained that it never gets out of character as the affectionate, well-instructed pet of the Army private," they wrote. Yet a stand-in lion named Jackie was actually used for some scenes in "Fearless."

Fearless Fagan is a story based on a real life lion and his best human friend. Carleton Carpenter plays the human friend and while he's not an animal trainer per se, he and Fagan the lion have worked out a marvelous circus act for themselves.
Fearless Fagan plot "As Told in LIFE Magazine and the Nation's Press" Floyd Hilston has a close bond with his pet, the lion Fagan. Floyd gets into trouble when he's called up by the military. Unable to sell Fagan to an untrustworthy circus trainer, Floyd asks his sergeant Kellwin to help him find a good home for his pet.
