- Gold & Silver - Gen 2 (1999, Game Boy Color) Gold, Silver and the follow-up Crystal are by far the best games in the series. They enhanced what made the originals so great, fixed a few issues, and added more elements to the standard formula that would be used in each game following, like berries, Exp Share, two new types, Pokérus, and shiny Pokémon.
- Red & Blue - Gen 1 (1996, Game Boy) You must have guessed that Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow would all be up near the top of the list. After all, they were what started it all and propelled Pokémon into being the most lucrative media franchise of all time.
- Ruby & Sapphire - Gen 3 (2002, Game Boy Advance) Gen 3 introduced several new concepts like Pokémon Natures, double battles, and a long list of new abilities that would continue to show up in following games.
- Scarlet & Violet - Gen 9 (2022, Switch) This is honestly one of the hardest games to rank. As I said in my Scarlet and Violet review, this could have been the best Pokémon game of all time if it wasn't for all of the technical issues.

- Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver. The Johto games are already among the greatest in the franchise, so it's no surprise that these remakes pushed it over the top.
- Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This does count as a mainline Pokémon game, despite not being a new generation, and not being like any other Pokémon game, well, ever.
- Pokémon Black & White, Black 2 & White 2. Wouldn’t you know it, it’s another generation that has a direct sequel. Once again the tone of the main series games darkened, and the moral ethics of catching monsters in order to make them battle is brought into question by the game’s antagonist.
- Pokémon Conquest. Giving Pokémon the full tactical RPG treatment is something that needed to happen eventually, and should happen again because Pokémon Conquest is brilliant.
