Near Gratiot and Randolph Streets, the six+ block Eastern Market is much more than a farmer’s market. It's a culture of its own.

Jul 18, 2020 · Eastern Market was originally known as The Farmer’s Market in Detroit when it opened in 1841. That’s over 150 years ago…and counting! During that time, when it was originally located in Cadillac Square, only hay and wood was sold. In 1891 more sheds were added and a location change was made to the northeast of Detroit’s downtown area.
The Eastern Market tours are just one of several walking tours put on by Preservation Detroit to celebrate Detroit’s history. Preservation Detroit board member Jennifer Ruud said the group started in the 70s as “Preservation Wayne” when a group of Wayne State University students wanted to save the David McKenzie house, named after the first dean of the college, from demolition.
