Captained by Billy Wright, Wolves finally claimed the league championship for the first time in 1954, overhauling fierce rivals West Bromwich Albion late in the season.
Established in 1877, Wolverhampton Wanderers were founder members of the Football League along with eleven other clubs. Now known as the English Football League (EFL), it was the world’s first domestic football league.
The team played its first game on 13 January 1877 against a reserve side from Stafford Road, later merging with the football section of a local cricket club called Blakenhall Wanderers to form Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 1879.
History. The club, not to be confused by the at that time already existing Wanderers FC, was founded in 1877 and it was one of the original included teams when Football League was founded in 1888. The same season year would the team reach the final in the FA Cup, which ended with a loss against Preston North End.
