May 27, 2023 · Though there were drive-ins as early as the 1910s, the first patented drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933 by Richard Hollingshead in New Jersey. He created it as a solution for people unable to comfortably fit into smaller movie theater seats after creating a mini drive-in for his mother.
Although New York state was one of the first 10 states to host a drive-in theater (the first one opened in New York in 1938 on Long Island), the Empire State was still a late bloomer for drive-ins. Generally, across America, the peak years for drive-in theaters were the late 1950's.

The Sunrise Drive-In later had a huge curved screen and the side that faced the street was covered in gaudy neon. It also had a big play park and concession stand.
