Carlos Juan Finlay (1833-1915) was born in Cuba of European parents. He was sent to the Continent at the age of eleven for boarding school and then arrived in 1853 at the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia to earn his medical degree.
Bouts of childhood illness interrupted his schooling, but he was able to enroll in the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he earned his medical degree on March 10, 1855.
After he recovered from typhoid, his second illness, he decided to go to the U.S. to study medicine, and he enrolled in Jefferson Medical College where he graduated in 1855. He practiced in a small town in northwest Cuba but moved to Havana where he found the practice and life style more suitable.
