    • People on Twitter Had A Field Day with The ‘New California’ Concept

Some are callingthe efforts to secede from California “Cal-Exit.” The new California Republic would, to some degree, mirror the rural/urban divide that has played out in recent presidential elections. Indeed, the New California concept would “incorporate most of the state’s rural counties, leaving the urban coastal counties to the current state of California,” CBS reports. “There’s something wrong when you have a rural county such as this one, and you go down to Orange County which is mostly urban, and it has the same set of problems, and it happens because of how the state is being governed and taxed,” Preston told the network. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, “The new state, as envisioned, would exclude parts of California along the coastline from Orange north to Napa counties; New California would include all other parts of California, including San Diego County, leaving the coastal stretch as California.” Some people thought the fixation on excluding the state’s urban a...

Some people thought the “New California” hype was just that. See above photo. Others thought it was just more evidence of vitriol toward urban America, although supporters say it’s the result of frustration over inept leadership. How serious are the founders of “New California”? They unveiled a “Declaration of Independence.” You can read their statement in full online. The statement reads, “The U.S. Declaration of Independence of 1776, the Alta California Declaration of Independence of 1836 and the Sonoma Proclamation of 1846 declared the Right of the People in the states of Alta California and California respectively (present day California) to throw off the bonds of tyranny.” California is so big that New California would be even bigger than most states, its founders say. “New California will be the 6th largest State behind New York (bigger than Illinois and Penn),” they write. “It’s Estimated 25-27 seats in the US House of Representatives will go to New California. The history of the Republic dates back to the survivors of Vault 15 who emerged from the shelter around 2097 and founded the town of Shady Sands. With the assistance of Vault Dweller, who destroyed the Khan raider tribe, Aradesh and his daughter, Tandi, led the community into prosperity. With expanding trade routes came cultural exchange, eventually culminating in a movement aiming at forming a national entity. The idea resonated with other wastelanders and won popular support, leading to the...

Abstractly, the NCR represents progress; while tribals and other wastelanders scratch out a meager existence, citizens of the NCR enjoy the wasteland luxuries of a steady economy, healthcare, laws, and legitimate government, not to mention the largest military to ensure they have a shot at more than just survival. Subordinated to the President and the Congress, the military of the Republic is one of its most distinguishing elements. The core component, the Army, has between tens and hundreds of thousands of servicemen, either volunteers or draftees, organized into divisions and battalions, equipped with standardized weapons and armor, and with varying degrees of training and competence. They are the proverbial sledgehammer, a tool used to crush enemies of the Republic and build order in the lands under...

Many people in the western wastelands have mixed feelings about the NCR. Some people strongly support the Republic's goals of spreading democracy and the rule of law, and others vehemently oppose their methods of \\"controlling\\" everything they come into contact with. With wastelanders who were used to having no more than a mayor or sheriff now suddenly being part of a complex political structure and having to pay taxes, some view it as a loss of the frontier lifestyles that once defined them....

Overall, the Republic can be readily described as the most advanced entity in the post-nuclear North America. While smaller organizations do possess more advanced weapons, armor, or tools (like the Enclave, Brotherhood of Steel, or the Shi), no one can rival the Republic's agriculture, industry, economy, and military, with the sole exception of the Caesar's Legion or pre-War Brotherhood of Steel. The keystone of the Republic's economic might are its brahmin herds and arable land, painstakingl...

    • The Vermont Republic: 1777-1791. Before it became a U.S. state, Vermont spent 14 years as a de facto independent republic. The breakaway had its roots in a dispute with the neighboring state of New York, which claimed Vermont’s land as its own.
    • The State of Muskogee: 1799-1803. Few figures from early American history had a more colorful resume than William Augustus Bowles. The swashbuckling Marylander served in a British loyalist unit during the American Revolution, but left the army in 1779 and married into a tribe of Creek Indians in Spanish Florida.
    • The Republic of West Florida: 1810. In the early 1800s, the United States and Spain were embroiled in a dispute over “West Florida,” a small slice of the Gulf Coast that encompassed parts of what are now Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
    • The Republic of Fredonia: 1826-1827. Nearly a decade before there was a Republic of Texas, there was the shorter-lived—and much less successful—Republic of Fredonia.
