- Oblivion. Let’s start things off with one of my favorite ever Grimes tracks – Oblivion, off her album Visions. Whilst this was actually the third release by Grimes, Oblivion was the first song that I ever heard by her.
- Genesis. Before we move on to other albums, let’s take a look at another track from Visions, the first full track Genesis. This track is introduced with some truly angelic, reverb-soaked vocals on the video version of the song, but listen to the studio original and you will notice they’re not there.
- Kill V. Maim. Moving on to 2015, Grimes followed Visions with her fourth studio album Art Angels, and this album took a serious step up in production value.
- Circumambient. I know I said we were moving on to the later stuff, but let’s take a step back to appreciate another fantastic track from Visions, ‘Circumambient’.
- Pay As U Go Cartel – Know We (2000) Garage crew Pay As U Go Cartel were hugely influential in pioneering the sound of grime alongside the likes of So Solid Crew and Heartless Crew.
- Youngstar/Musical Mob – Pulse X (2002) Widely regarded as one of the earliest examples of the grime style of production, the influence of Youngstar’s Pulse X can’t be overstated.
- Wiley – Eskimo (2002) As grime emerged from the shadows of garage, the burgeoning genre needed its own identity to establish itself as a serious player – and Wiley provided it with his Eskimo riddim.
- Dizzee Rascal – I Luv U (2003) A list documenting the most important grime records of all time isn’t a real list without the inclusion of Dizzee Rascal’sI Luv U. When Dylan Mills detonated this bass-heavy atomic bomb, which he produced at just 16 years old, it sent shockwaves through Britain’s mainstream music scene and became grime’s first major pop anthem.

The song is a haunting and beautiful synthpop track that explores the concept of time. The lyrics are full of imagery and metaphors that are open to interpretation.
