Aidan of Lindisfarne. (died 651). Not much is known with certainty about the early life of Aidan of Lindisfarne except that he was born in Ireland, was probably a disciple of Senan on Scattery Island, and became a monk on the island of Iona.
Aidan (died 651) was the founder and first bishop of the Lindisfarne island monastery in England. He is credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria. Aidan is the Anglicised form of the original Old Irish Aedán, Modern Irish Aodhán (meaning 'little fiery one').
Saint Aidan (born, Ireland—died Aug. 31, 651, Bamburgh, Northumberland, Eng.; feast day August 31) was an apostle of Northumbria, monastic founder, and the first bishop of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, off the coast of Northumberland.
