The tale made its way to France via Molière, who wrote his own play in 1665 and from then on became a staple with all sort of versions, including a 1761 ballet by Gluck. Mozart and Da Ponte’s most crucial source, however, was a previous libretto by Giovanni Bertati for a Don Giovanni opera by Giuseppe Gazzaniga that premiered in early 1787.
