      Shootability factor

      • The main advantage a semi-auto has over a pump is its overall shootability factor. “Shootability” is a term for the combination of greater speed, less recoil and the fact that the gun can be operated with one hand and/or from awkward positions if needed. That’s a pretty big deal in the unpredictable arena of a home invasion.

    • The shape of a revolver’s grip is not compromised by the necessity of feeding an ammunition magazine through it. Revolver grips can be shorter front to back than semi-autos and they can be curved in a form that better fits your hand.
    • A revolver’s cartridge isn’t compromised by the necessity to feed it through the grip either. Magnum Research even makes a .45-70 revolver. Try putting that round in an auto-loader and getting your mitts around it.
    • A revolver doesn’t require fully jacketed bullets to feed reliably. You’re free to use semi-jacketed hollow points, semi-jacketed soft points, lead round nose, lead wadcutters, lead semi-wadcutters, and my personal favorite, lead semi-wadcutter hollow points, a bullet design Buffalo Bore refers to as ‘Deer Grenades’.
    • Not only will revolvers function perfectly regardless of how hot or mild the rounds are, many are even multi-caliber. . 357 magnums shoot .38 specials, .44 magnums shoot .44 specials and .460 S&Ws shoot .454 Casull, .45 Colt and .45 Schofield – that’s about a 10-1 power ratio.

The Russian AK-47 was invented by Mikhail Kalashnikov and aligned with design doctrines of being easy to mass produce, easy to maintain, and easy to operate. WWII taught the Russians that most fighting in the future would likely take place in shorter distances and so they chose the shorter 7.62x39mm round instead of previous 7.62x54mm rounds. This ...

You can see above that the 7.62x39mm AK round is roughly the same length as the AR 5.56x45mm but it has a much larger bullet (roughly 3x heavier). So which is better? Answer is that it all depends:

While this is hotly debated, it shouldn’t be. The AR-15 is the better system, kind of. Where the AK shines is with zero maintenance, and we really mean zero. No lube, no cleaning, no training, no replacement parts. Under those unlikely and grossly neglectful conditions, the AK will probably outlast an AR. Look at the AKs still in service around the...

Right now, prices are crazy. As of March 2021, you’ll find AR-15s for about $700+ and AKs for $900+. It’s a weird and wild world right now and prices are changing all the time. Ammo is also a huge question, normally on average 7.62×39 will be cheaper than 5.56 NATO — but that is normally because you almost always buy 7.62×39 steel cased and 5.56 br...
