The island was occupied by the Lenape Native Americans prior to the arrival of Dutch settlers in the 17th century.

Floyd Bennett was the naval pilot for Commander Richard E. Byrd's flight over the North Pole in 1926. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
