It is located in the southwestern corner of the province on the banks of the Assiniboine River, approximately 214 km (133 mi) west of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and 120 km (75 mi) east of the Saskatchewan border.

It has a history of Hudson's Bay Company posts, settlers from Quebec and the Maritimes, and federal agricultural research station. It also has a university, a college, and a cultural and natural attractions.

Brandon is known as a city that is not too big to be impersonal, but not so small that it lacks the amenities of large cities.
