Cherokee County, which was established in 1836, is named in honor of the Indians who controlled the area until the 1835 Treaty of New Echota. During the Civil War, the county was a center of iron manufacturing and the Cornwall Furnace in Cedar Bluff is a relic of that industry.

May 4, 2023 · The Cherokee County Historical Museum is located at 101 East Main Street. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There is a small admission fee. The museum has space for meetings and events and offers guided and non-guided group tours.
