It was created in 1819 by a treaty with the Cherokees and extended south to the state line. It includes the city of Chattanooga, a major railroad and tourist center, and several mountain ranges.

Tennessee at the time defined Hamilton County as being located “southwest of Rhea and south and east of Bledsoe and Marion counties.” Rhea County has important bearings on the development of early Hamilton County. Before 1819, the Sale Creek Valley area was a part of the southern boundary of Rhea County.
