Giuseppe „Pino“ Lella (* June 1 1926 in Milano) is an Italian motorist and contemporary witness of the final phase of World War II. He was the driver of General Hans Leyers and at the same time spy for the Alliance.
The novel’s protagonist, Pino Lella starts out as a carefree Italian youth whose main concern is finding love. One day, while walking around Milan, he meets a woman named Anna and asks her out on a date. Anna accepts but doesn’t show up. That night, the Allied forces begin bombing Milan.

Jan 26, 2019 · Mark Sullivan’s historical/biographical novel Beneath a Scarlet Sky won a thumbs-up by my beloved book club a few months ago. It is based on the true story of a great Italian guy, Pino Lella, who played a part in the Allies’ success in northern Italy.
At the age of 17, Giuseppe “Pino” Lella helped Jews escape the Nazis in northern Italy, guiding them from a Catholic boys school north of Lake Como, up and over the Alps, and into neutral Switzerland.
